If you ever get to East Haddam, CT, stop by Gillette Castle.

I live in NW Connecticut, and IMO it's worth a stop. The castle has its own railroad. You won't spend a lot of time there but it's interesting to walk through it and wonder what it might have been to live in something like that. The bedrooms were surprisingly tiny.

The woodwork is amazing. He made fairly intricate mechanical wooden locks.

        Agreed.

Last time I was there they had several rooms closed off, either because they were storing things in them or because they needed work. The castle has numerous design flaws which aren't obvious when you look at it. They essentially figured out what they were going to build as they built it. Which explains the way it sprawls out from the main living room.

It's an incredible setting, but it's too bad there wasn't more period furniture to go with the castle. When Gillette's family sold/gave the castle to the care of the state, they took most of the furnishings with them. Which is understandable, but disappointing. It would be twice as interesting with most of the furnishings as Gillette lived in his time.

Caring for a place such as that is daunting. They were dealing with leaks in the roof which have apparently been there since the initial construction (bad design, but typical of castles in general)...
